An interview with Nicole Spohr, co-creator of Season Circles
Nicole is a scientist and menstrual educator with a passion for teaching women about their natural cycles and how to live in harmony with them. Alongside Natacha Volpini, she co-created Season Circles, a women’s circle hosted at every seasonal shift.
What inspired you to set up your Women’s Circle?
Nicole: I guess my love for making the world a better place for women is what really inspired me to start hosting Women’s Circles. It all began back in 2017, when I co-founded a social business called Fala Frida, focused on educating and empowering women through feminism. Over the years, I’ve run book clubs, workshops, and courses—both online and in person—so gathering in circles with women has always felt natural to me. But it wasn’t until 2022 that I co-created Season Circles, a project that holds a women’s circle at every seasonal shift. Through Season Circles, we invite women to slow down and notice the changes happening both around and within them. We explore how to live in sync with the natural rhythms of the Earth, our bodies, and the universe itself.
What do you see as your most important job as a space holder/facilitator of women’s spaces?
Nicole: I believe that sharing what I know is just as important as truly listening to what other women have to say. The exchange is such a key part of what happens in the circle. When someone opens up about something that’s been troubling—or even amusing—them, it often resonates with others. That sense of connection helps everyone feel a little less alone in their experiences. We share, we listen, we laugh, we cry. Every circle kind of takes on a life of its own, and as facilitators, it’s our job not only to plan and guide, but also to step back and let the magic unfold.
Why is educating women about menstruation and their natural cycles so important to you?
Nicole: Because the menstrual cycle is such a huge part of who we are. It shapes how we see the world and how we connect with others—our perspective can shift completely depending on where we are in our cycle. When we start to really understand and respect that, life becomes a bit more gentle, more aligned. And when we actually live in tune with it, we unlock all sorts of superpowers—each phase brings its own strengths. To me, this work is about empowering women. Because once they truly grasp the depth of this inner power, the world won’t stay the same.
What has sitting in Circle given you?
Nicole: The circle is a non-hierarchical space—when we sit in circle, no one is above or below. We meet each other eye to eye, and from there, we build a practice of mutual respect. Jean Shinoda Bolen says that we need to repeat something enough times for it to become the norm. So when women form the millionth circle, that’s when real change will happen. I like to think that by holding these spaces, I’m contributing to that movement—playing my part in the creation of the millionth circle. Through this work, I hope to remind women that there are other ways of doing things on Earth—ways beyond the hierarchical, capitalist, and male-dominated systems we’re so used to.
Tell us more about Season Circles!
Nicole: Modern life, dictated by artificial schedules and the ever-present glow of screens, has distanced us from the natural cycles of the Sun and Moon—and from our own feminine creative essence. The Seasons Circle project was born from a deep longing to reconnect women's rhythms with those of Mother Earth, through the celebration and awareness of the wisdom each season brings.
Event Information:
Nicole and Natacha hold four Season Circles each year, aligning with the turning of the seasons. Each gathering lasts around four hours and offers a rich, nourishing experience. They share ceremonial cacao, dive into the wisdom of the season, and engage in a hands-on activity that reflects the time of year. They also explore herbs and essential oils that resonate with the current seasonal energy.
These circles are open to all women who feel the call—to come together, to reconnect with themselves and with others, to nurture sisterhood, and to align more deeply with the natural cycles around and within us.
Their next gathering will be on June 21st in Amsterdam, and the cost is 66 euros.
